About This Role
FlySafair is recruiting a First Officer for commercial jet operations in South Africa, with JHB shown as the ATS location and JHB, DBN, HLA and CPT listed in the job title. The role combines safe and timely aircraft operation with continuous monitoring of the flight path, systems, instruments, geographical position and terrain clearance; it also requires completion of pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight checks, checklist execution, radio communications and accurate legal and operational reporting. The First Officer supports the Captain with route, weather, fuel, alternates and restriction decisions, maintains regulatory and Operations Manual compliance, contributes to crew discipline, morale, professional standards and customer service, and assumes command if the Captain becomes incapacitated. This is a permanent skilled position with a market-related salary and irregular rostered hours.
Duties & Responsibilities
- The First Officer ensures safe and timely flight operations, monitors the aircraft flight path and systems, navigates and operates the flight, performs checks and procedures before, during and after flight, communicates with company departments, service providers and passengers, and complies with SACAA and international regulations, company policies, procedures, Operations Manual requirements and aircraft-type SOPs, limitations and performance requirements. The First Officer completes legal administrative documents, provides customer service, maintains discipline, conduct, appearance, expertise and morale among the crew, gives the Captain advice, information and assistance for safe and efficient operations, and undertakes additional duties allocated by the Captain. If the Captain is incapacitated, the First Officer assumes command, while otherwise assisting with the Captain's operational and administrative duties and maintaining an independent check of the aircraft's position and terrain clearance. Before flight, the First Officer reviews the planned route, briefing sheets, forecasts, conditions and runway states at the destination and alternates, completes Operations Manual checks and required documents, and works with the Captain on fuel selection, alternates and operational restrictions. In flight, the First Officer performs or monitors normal, abnormal and emergency checklists
- verifies procedures, techniques and flight-instrument indications, particularly altitude/height, speed and heading
- immediately advises the Captain of deviations, hazardous situations, abnormal readings, warning lights or indicators
- and conducts required R/T communications. After flight, the First Officer completes OM and FCOM procedures and submits all relevant documentation and reports, including IQSMS, while ensuring continued compliance with the company Operations Manual.
Requirements
- Essential qualifications and conditions: Grade 12 or equivalent
- SACAA Commercial Pilot Licence
- Class 1 SACAA medical
- for non-type-rated or Boeing type-rated applicants, at least 1,500 total hours including 500 hours of multi-turbine time
- multi-crew experience
- no existing medical conditions
- willingness to sign applicable training bond(s)
- no criminal record
- willingness to undergo a drug and alcohol test
- own transport and an RSA driver's licence
- South African citizenship with proof of identity
- a valid RSA passport
- willingness to work irregular hours on a roster
- detailed knowledge and understanding of national aviation regulations including SACAA and ICAO
- knowledge of Doc 8186
- and knowledge of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilots licensing content. A SACAA ATPL is preferred, while a Boeing type rating and experience on commercial jets over 20 tons are advantageous.
