About This Role
Joby Aviation is hiring a Manager of S4 Pilot Instructors for its Flight Standards and Training team, on-site in Marina, California. The role builds and leads a versatile cadre of ground, simulator, and flight instructors who deliver Joby's standardized pilot training curriculum for the S4 — the company's all-electric, five-seat eVTOL aircraft being developed for commercial air taxi service. The successful candidate is an experienced, FAA-certificated pilot who establishes rigorous instructional standards, leads training initiatives, and helps shape Joby's pilot training program as the aircraft moves toward FAA certification and planned commercial launch in the US and Dubai.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the S4 pilot training courseware and to a standardized training course for S4 instructor pilots.
- Lead and manage a growing team of instructor pilots.
- Deliver standardized training modules, including pre-flight planning and briefing, training in both simulators and aircraft, and post-flight debriefs.
- Analyze trainee performance and write reports on the findings.
- Contribute to internal flight safety and standardization discussions.
- Complete all required documentation in accordance with Company and FAA procedures, observe all applicable laws and regulations, work in a safe manner in line with established operating procedures, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
- Required: at least 5 years of experience leading and managing people
- an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate
- an Instrument Airplane rating
- a minimum of 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command (PIC) flight time
- 2+ years of experience as a military or civilian instructor pilot
- 2+ years as a military or civilian operational, developmental, or production flight test pilot
- the ability to maintain at least a second-class FAA medical certificate
- excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
- the ability and willingness to work extended hours
- the ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally for business
- and proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. Desired: an FAA-certified flight instructor rating
- prior experience developing aviation courseware
- a commercial pilot certificate covering Airplane, Powered-Lift, and Rotorcraft categories (all three)
- and a bachelor's degree in aviation, engineering, or a related discipline.
