About This Role
Joby Aviation is seeking an Operational Test Pilot in Concord, California, to support operational evaluations of the J208, a Cessna Caravan integrated with Superpilot autonomy technology. The pilot will serve as the onboard pilot-in-command during crewed evaluation flights, monitor advanced automation, make real-time operational decisions, operate the Ground Control Station during uncrewed missions, and represent the product during customer demonstrations. The role also partners with developmental engineering to transfer operational lessons into future software and hardware iterations and requires travel of approximately 50% throughout the United States and internationally.
Duties & Responsibilities
- The Operational Test Pilot serves as the onboard pilot-in-command for J208 operational evaluation flights, monitors Superpilot autonomy systems, and makes real-time operational decisions to ensure safe mission execution.
- The role operates and monitors the Ground Control Station when the aircraft is flown in an uncrewed configuration, represents the J208 product and flight-evaluation program during live demonstrations for prospective and current military or civil customers, and works closely with developmental engineering teams to capture, analyze, and feed operational lessons learned into continuing flight-software and hardware updates.
- Responsibilities also include pre-flight planning, mission risk assessments, post-flight debriefs under military airfield rules, FAA regulations, and internal safety protocols, as well as deployed field-support workflows, flight-line logistics, and site setup while traveling up to 50% CONUS/OCONUS.

Requirements
- Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering or an aviation-related discipline with at least five years of relevant flight operations experience, a master's degree with at least three years of experience, or equivalent practical experience.
- Candidates must hold an ASEL Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating, have demonstrated Pilot-in-Command experience in fixed-wing flight operations, test environments, or operational evaluations, and be able to hold and maintain an FAA First or Second Class Medical Certificate.
- The position requires an active US Security Clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one after hire, willingness and ability to travel approximately 50% domestically and internationally, and qualification as a US Person under 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 for export-control compliance.
- Desired qualifications include Cessna 208 Caravan or turboprop experience, Ground Control Station or autonomous flight-control experience, operations on US military installations, customer-facing aviation experience, military aviation experience, and operational test-pilot experience.
