About This Role
XSTAR Aviation is hiring experienced multi-engine flight instructors in Abilene, Texas, to train the next generation of U.S. Air Force aviators within the bomber aircrew community. Operating under FAA Part 91, the Certified Flight Instructor / Pilot-in-Command flies several times each week and delivers ground-based instruction aimed at building airmanship, repetition and overall flying proficiency. Instructors mentor USAF aviators on instrument procedures, out-and-back mission profiles and terminal-area operations, and teach the differences between FAA and USAF procedures, airspace and regulatory frameworks. This is an in-person, non-commuter role requiring residence (or willingness to relocate) within 30 minutes of Abilene; the schedule runs Monday through Friday rather than a rotational airline pattern, and each pilot also carries an assigned ground duty (safety, training coordination or program administration) in a structure modeled on a military flying unit.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Act as CFI/PIC and conduct safe, efficient multi-engine flight operations under FAA Part 91 and company procedures.
- Plan and execute flight profiles and instruct aircrew on flight planning, aeronautical decision-making and mission execution.
- Mentor and instruct U.S.
- Air Force aviators on instrument procedures, out-and-back mission profiles and terminal-area operations, and fly proficiency-focused profiles that build airmanship, repetition and overall performance.
- Deliver ground-based instruction on the procedural, regulatory and airspace differences between FAA and USAF operations.
- Maintain high standards of aeronautical decision-making, risk management and crew coordination in all phases of flight, and collaborate with operations support personnel, maintenance teams and program leadership to ensure effective daily execution.
- Perform an assigned ground-duty role (e.g., safety, training coordination or program administration), participate in safety and continuous-improvement programs, keep accurate flight, training and administrative records, support operational planning, scheduling coordination and program meetings, and represent XSTAR Aviation professionally with military personnel, government stakeholders and industry partners.
- Limited travel may be required for training, aircraft repositioning or program coordination.
Requirements
- Minimum qualifications: 1,500 hours total flight time, 750 hours PIC, 500 hours of flight-instructor time and 500 hours of turbine time, with military pilots permitted to apply a 1.5x conversion factor. Candidates must hold ONE of the following: an FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI/CFII) certificate together with a Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI) rating
- an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with multi-engine privileges and prior CFI experience
- or be a current or former military instructor pilot. Multi-engine experience is required (multi-engine turbine experience preferred), along with demonstrated experience instructing in multi-engine aircraft. A current FAA medical certificate (Class II or higher), strong aeronautical decision-making and risk-management skills, excellent communication and instructional ability, the ability to work in a team-oriented operational environment, and a minimum of 10 years of aviation experience are required. HA-420 (HondaJet) experience is highly sought after. Prior military pilots who do not meet these minimums may be considered case-by-case. U.S. citizenship is required and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance is preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- multi-engine turbine experience, prior military aviation experience, instructor-pilot experience in a structured training program, experience operating under FAA Part 91 or Part 135, HA-420 flight experience, a bachelor's degree, and experience mentoring developing pilots.
