About This Role
This is an Instructor Pilot position for the C-5 Galaxy transport aircraft based at Lackland Air Force Base (JBSA San Antonio), operating under the US Air Force. The role involves providing advanced flight instruction in aircraft, simulator, and classroom environments, including specialized training in Visual Threat Recognition Avoidance Training (VTRAT), Crew Resource Management (CRM), and Instrument Refresher Courses (IRC). Candidates must be previously qualified C-5 Aircraft Commanders with a minimum of 1000 hours of C-5 flight experience and graduation from a formal instructor course, or experienced C-5 instructor pilots with 200+ hours of instruction time. This position requires US citizenship, a valid FAA Second Class Medical Certificate, ability to obtain Secret Level clearance, and maintains high standards for aviation instruction through rigorous evaluation and proficiency requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide pilot procedures instruction in aircraft, classroom, simulator, and other platform environments
  • Provide Visual Threat Recognition Avoidance Training (VTRAT)
  • Deliver Crew Resource Management (CRM) and Instrument Refresher Course (IRC) training
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and critique student performance and identify learning difficulties
  • Prescribe and conduct remedial instruction as needed
  • Assist in development of curriculum for new type courses
  • Review existing lessons and recommend changes to improve training
  • Conduct ground training for other crewmembers
  • Maintain proficiency in operation of aircrew training devices and simulators
  • Perform administrative duties including scheduling, record keeping, and grade book entries
  • Monitor student progress and provide counseling
  • Conduct quality assurance and safety audits
  • Evaluate instructor personnel in classroom and training devices
  • Perform observation flights biennially in MEP status
  • Ensure compliance with Air Education and Training Command (AETCI) 36-2909
  • Maintain annual testing and evaluation proficiency
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements
  • Previously qualified as C-5 AMP/C-5M Aircraft Commander with 1000 hours C-5 flight experience
  • Graduate of formal instructor course OR prior C-5 instructor pilot with 200 hours instructor experience
  • US Citizenship
  • Able to obtain Secret Level Clearance
  • Valid FAA Second Class Medical Certificate
  • Proficient in C-5 aircraft systems and operational procedures
  • Thoroughly proficient in student performance evaluation and remedial instruction
  • Ability to stand and conduct instruction for up to 6 hours per day
  • Physically able to enter and exit simulator and aircraft per government regulations and OSHA standards
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Proficiency in simulated instrument, take-off, landing, and emergency procedures
  • Pass annual government evaluation exams (open and closed book)
  • Pass biennial observation flights in MEP status
  • Comply with AETCI 36-2909 standards
  • Working knowledge of computers and office software
  • Ability to analyze common professional literature
  • Ability to effectively present information to management and colleagues
